I've been looking at the low cost mass-storage options, and it appears
that the 21MB floptical has about gone the way of the dinosaur. Is this a
correct perception? What would you recommend? Go ahead and buy one and
hope for the best? If so, which, the PLI or MASS?
The 128MB MO drives are still a little too high for me.

Subject: 3Com EtherLink/SE using Sys 7.0x
I'm using a 3Com EtherLink/SE Adapter (card) and a 3Com
transceiver (3C563) on an SE. I have no problem when working
under System 6.0.8 but have failed when trying to use Fetch,
Telnet, Eudora, etc.,while using System 7.0 or 7.01. Yes, I
have downloaded and installed the System 7 drivers from
3Com.
The uncanny thing is I am able, when using System 7.0x,
to see and connect to the various campus servers but when I
open Telnet or Eudora I'm told there's a problem finding the
"Domain Name Server", that "none of the known name servers
are responding." Preference files, host files, tel.config
files, and MCP setups are the same for both System 6 & 7. I'm
able to open Telnet under System 7.0x whixh indicates that the
MCP driver is loaded. Why then, under Sytem 7, do I get the
error message and under System everything is hunky-dory??
Any suggestions, hints, comments are welcomed. I have been
fiddling with this for the past two weeks and have exhausted
all my possibilities ;-(

I have two monitors on my IIci, a NEC Multisync 3D (13") and a Radius Color
Pivot. The 13" is on top of the IIci, the pivot to the left. And surprise,
surprise, when they're both in use the pivot flickers like mad. That's
expected. When I use both monitors I've been moving the 13" way off to the
right, which solves the problem of the flickers, but then I have two monitors
two feet apart which is quite confusing.
So...does anyone have any suggestions on shielding to go between the

I wouldn't jump to that conclusion so hastily. Disturbed by this
ongoing rumor that Avatex has shut down, I tried ALL of the tech support
and customer service numbers listed in my manual. They are *ALL*
functional and alive, with the exception of the US main tech support
line, which has been changed to (510) 498-1115. (The new number works
fine).
I imagine that Everex has shut down or changed its 800 lines in face
of the recession, because I also tried the two 800 lines you mentioned
and they are, in fact, down, as you said. However, all other aspects of
the company seem alive and well and I would venture to say that it is
premature at best to be spreading news of the company's downfall! :)

When I purchased my Interfax, it came with v1.3, since I told the
vendor that I was already using System 7. I have used the unit, along
with its drivers, on a Macintosh Plus and SE/30 so far, with radically
different configurations, with no problems. I'm very happy with the
output from this fax, and I use it constantly for business
communications. Possibly my only gripe is that the Interfax application
is a tad unstable when the modem is doing something complicated and
one tries to access modem-specific information in the config menus, but
apart from that I've had no cause for complaint. The INIT/CDEV is
efficient and unobtrusive, and is exceptionally well written. As a
programmer, I can appreciate the difficulty of monitoring the opening
and closing of the serial port to correctly surrender it to other apps.

Your bad performance under Sys7 is unfortunate. I my experience,
the use of ATM or TrueType fonts greatly improves the appearance of the
faxes, since the driver can access a 3x size version of whatever size
font you're using.
As for the version 1.3 not being posted, I believe there was a
notice posted at some point on the board explaining this: as you
mentioned, there is an upgrade fee from v1.2 to 1.3. Many users received
the unit with 1.2 (At their request, if they were running 6.x). In
order to avoid people download 1.3 and escaping the upgrade fee, Abaton
didn't post it on the BBS. There is, however, a package explaining the
upgrade process.
I don't understand if they've given this up with 1.31, or whether
there is some catch in the software that means it can't be installed
unless one previously had v1.3...
What you wish to question, I believe, is Abaton's upgrade policy.
Their postings on the BBS simply follow those policies.

As you say, these numbers no longer function. However, Technical
support is now reachable at (510) 498-1115 from inside the US, and
(510) 498-4433 from outside the US. As well, Customer service is
reachable at (510) 498-4499. These numbers are, BTW, listed in the
appendix of your manuals. (With the exception of the Tech support for
the US, which was recently changed but which plays a recorded message
informing you of the change)

Looking for a generic fax package because of the "demise" of
Abaton seems a little premature at this point, since they give every
indication of being alive and well!
However, I use the Interfax package regularly and would be happy to

Having just read Marsh Gardiner's explanation about what is wrong with

The reason that I didn't see the problem is that I stripped off the .sea

Once it is expanded properly, it works fine.

The DiskDoubler* patcher to 3.7.7 appears to have a small but
significant problem: after de-binhexing the archive, the .sea file IS
there, but it's invisible.
You have to use ResEdit or similar utilities (DiskTop, DeskZap and so
on) to open the "infos" of the invisible file and set the "Invisible"

I hope this helps.

>At long last I am about to upgrade to a machine with Virtual Memory. Given

I strongly recommend you to take a close look at Virtual 3.0 from Connectix
rather than using Apples VM. With Virtual you are not restricted to using
contigious disk space although it gives somewhat better performance and you
have the option of only allocating a swap file as large as the extra amount
of memory you need, good if you don't have a very large hard drive. Apples
own VM forces you to hawe a swap file as large as the total amount of
application memory you set up. You can have different settings for 24 and
32 bit memory mode. Virtual is also snappier than Apples VM. In the manual
you are warned not to use a different partition of your hard disk for
virtual memory since this can actually maximize head travel. Having an
extra hard drive attached to your Mac can be advantageous if you run the
applications from one drive and have the swap file on the other.
Highly recommended.

I've been also using AltCDEF since the days of system 6, and it still works

The recent addition of Apple's (supposedly unsupported) control panel
Scrolling added the real time thumb scrolling along with (currently unused)

and works for me without a problem. So, just get them both and enjoy your

Hi!
I'm looking for a full page display (FPD) to plug into my SE with 25 MHz
68030 Mobius accelerator. The obvious choice would be the Mobius monitor,
but I would like to keep it when I upgrade to a newer machine (hopefully
sometime later this year). Mobius tells me that their monitor won't be
compatible with the Apple built-in video of the newer Macs. On the other
hand they tell me that they offer a $20 adapter so one can plug in an Apple
FPD into their accelerator. Somehow this low price suggests to me that the
two interfaces are not THAT different (aside from the number of pins in the
connectors, 9 vs 15).
So here is my question:
Could someone who has documentation on the Apple and/or Mobius FPD
connector/cable send me this info or point me to the sources, please?
Thanks very much for your help, Please reply directly, I'll summarize for
info-mac if appropriate.

Subject: high speed modem, Term, Kermit, WhiteKnight, and ZTerm
[Sorry for this long subject. This is a long letter too.]
Hi,
Finally, I could not resist the temptation of high speed modem and ordered
one Practical PeripheralsU PM14400FXSA from MacConnection. The first one got
some problem and after some discussion with the techinical support staff of
Compu$erveUs PPI forum I sent it back to MacConnection for an exchange. The
secone one seems fine. Both people from MacConnection adn PPI are very
helpful to solve this problem.
Now the problem come to software. I use my 2400 Powermodem from MacWarehouse
for more than one and a half years without a glitch. For this kind of modem,
you donUt have much to worry. Any piece of telecom software which claims to
handle the Hayes compatible should do the job. My choice is Term 4.6.4 for
IBM/370 connection. Term is a nice piece and in my opinion people should
choose it over MacKermit if their IBM/370 support not only CMS-Kermit but
also RAMC/WMAC. RMAC/WMAC has a much better throughput than Kermit. Can you
imagine that a 2400 modem without MNP or V.42bis can sometimes reach more
than 500 cps for files , say, smaller than 20KB? Term can handle MacBinary
download too. Through the normal phoneline, it won't give up or hang as
easily as MacKermit. The only situation MacKermit can beat Term is that you
get a connection through a line which ring your bell every ten seconds; that
means you have to hit master reset key at the same period before you can do
anything. Then the classical 92 bytes (short) packet Kermit show her charming
with 100 cps throughput.
How about ZTerm? I tried it occationally since I am not active in local BBS
or CI$ or other commercial on-line service. As a result, z-modem, QuickB,
etc., never impress me even everybody says it.
[To David P. Alverson: David, the fee will on their way within the next few
weeks. I have to admit that I didn't understand and appreciate how marvellous
your ZTerm is untill I spent a lot of time on telecom. Thanks for your
accomplishment]
O.K. My PM14400FXSA (As Adam Engst said in Tidbits #163, what a long name?)
sits in front of me and stares me with his RReadyS message. RWhat can I do
for you, pal?S RHum. Not many thing I can do with this guy before I can get
someone handle his hardware handshaking tail.S Term didn't do this. MacKermit
only gives less than 75 per cent of the promising throughput even at two
oUclock of Saturday morning when a lot of smart people are jumping up and
down on the waxed floor and very few stupid kids has nowhere to go but still
sitting in front of their Mac, or whatever is appropriate according to your
imagination.
QuickLink II Fax, which comes with PM14400FXSA (Again!), didnUt do much
better than MacKermit. So I digged into my copy of compPsysPmacPcommPfaq
compiled by Eric Rosen at <eric@cse.ucsc.edu>, one of the best report I ever
come by. Well, there is only Term (V4.6.6) support my first choice,
RMAC/WMAC, while no hardware handshaking yet. The only shareware which
supports Kermit is QVT by QPC Software. The newest version I could find from
sumex and umich is V3.5 dated back in April U89. It suuports VT52, VT100,
VT220 terminal emulation but no background file transfer. The performance is
a disappointing figure, less than 340cps for a 9600bps connection, about one
third of an ideal result. Then I found that Termy 2.0 can use Communication
Tool Box and and there is already one Kermit Tool available in sumex. Great!
I grab every tools in sumex and the basic connection set from ftp.apple.com.
Termy and Kermit Tool GH give similar performane as MacKermit.
Uuencode/decode like feature is not important to me. The destination of file
transfer seems has no choice but the same folder as Termy. Furthermore, Termy
seems has no access of serial port before making any connection (Terminal
Ready LED is not lit), but it will crash if I use other telecomm software
while leave Termy opened but no connection in the background. After I
finished the telecomm session, quit the program, switched back to Termy,
Termy crashed immediately and the file itself was damaged.
It seemed to me at this point that there is probably no good answer from
shareware/freeware to serve my purpose. The only alternate is to check
commercial software for answer. VersaTerm (Pro)? PacerTerm? MicroPhone (Pro)?
SmartCom? MacIntercom? WhiteKnight? Too many choice. Too little experience.
Price range? It would be better under or close to $100. Fancy user interface,
like 3-D icons? A few black and white bottom is good enough. Script? I have a
littlt programming experience and the script is definately not as hard as
Physics. If there is a powerful script to automatize some basic routine, it
is a big plus. Terminal emulation? VT100 should be enough in most of the
situation. Fax? I seldom use it. Direct connection? FTP? Telnet? LAT? SLIP?
ADSP? No, I just need a old fashion telecommunication package going through
the phone wire. And then? Who knows?
After one week of consideration, I decide to pick WhiteKnight and do some
comparison with the best telecomm shareware, ZTerm 0.9.

Quick B | 110cps | 225cps | 185cps
This is not a very objective, thorough comparison though. I repeatedly
download a fixed size file several times, using different protocol, sometime
more than two times for a protocol. All this is done after midnight of local
time for avoiding high traffic and system overload. It can only serve a
indication but not a benchmark.
The major speed difference in the table came from the CompuServe's own QuickB
protocol. The QuickB is developed to be about twice as fast as X-modem
according to the text file accompanying with Raymond Lau's QuickB DA (Yes, he
is StuffIt's author.) Such effect was shown clearly by ZTerm, but not so
obvious by WhiteKnight. One interesting point about the way WhiteKnight
supports QuickB is that WhiteKnight itself doesnUt offer the engine for
QuickB. Instead WhiteKnight do it through a small module called RRCMDS.
According to Scott WatsonUs WhiteKnight manual, RRCMDUs are to WhiteKnight
what XCMDUs are to Hypercard.S As a result, it is said that WhiteKnight do
support QuickB on the back of WhiteKnightUs package, while Eric RosenUs
compPsysPmacPcommPfaq said that WhiteKnight does not suuport QuickB.
Considering the way QuickB trnasfer option implemented by ZTerm and
WhiteKnight, they are both very strange or not very obvious and intuitive. I
found ZTermUs QB option accidentally on those file transfer submenu. On the
other hand, it took me more than half hour to go through every entry about
CompuServe in manualUs index to find out the way WhiteKnight support QB.
Besides, QB receiving procedure on ZTerm will be activated automatically
without user's part of work after the QB prorocol had been choosed on CI$,
unlike the procedure for most of other protocol. However, WhiteKnight
doesnUt do this for the user. Users themselves should go to activate a
procedure called QuickB.PROC through RInitiate Procedure IS under Service
menu. That is the reason why Scott Watson himself suggested user to put a
Macro Key and link it to QuickB.PROC module. Personally, I prefer David P.
AlversonUs approach to Scott WatsonUs. (A side note: I also prefer DavidUs
transfer progress window. I donUt know which font he chosed but it looks not
so crowded, compared with ScottUs choice of of Chicago font.) Maybe this is
the reason The Macintosh Bible said RWhiteKnight pays no attention to the
balance between power and friendliness (compared to MicroPhone).S
Finally, I decide to keep WhiteKnight in my harddisk and pay ZTermUs shareware
fee eventhough I probably wonUt use it after this. After all, ZTerm still sit
in my harddisk longer than the trial period, it is a good piece of software
to deserve my overdue payment, and someday hopefully it could start to
support Kermit as the way it do to QuickB.
Excuse me for two more questions. First, does any user of FirstClass Client
2.0.7 experience any crash happened after too many busy signal forcing you to
give up the hope of successful connection and quit the program and , say,
come back the program after another half hour? Sometimes, FCC will complain
problems of connection with modem, cables etc. after encountering busy signal
in the first trial. Sometimes the problem would disappear without any action
except you ignore the complaint and try it again.
The second problem came from Stuffit Lite 3.0.4. I got six archives in the
StuffIt 1.5.1 format. So, when you open them StuffIt will ask you whether you
want to convert them to StuffIt Lite format. After finishing each conversion,
before the thermostat bar disappeared, it crashed. It crashed in such regular
manner that I can turn off most of my extension except AppleUs own extension
like TuneUp, printerDriver, etc. and see it still crashed. What supprised me
was those converted file were all in good shape and I could open them
successfuly afterwards. MacUsBug said that there were some errors while
reading from supervisor data. Any idea?
Thank you if you spent so much time to read and offer the opportunity to let
me share my experience with you.

Then I download from there to my machine, using Xmodem and
binary transfer (since it's .hqx).
There's your problem. Since it's .HQX you should use ASCII transfer.
HQX is a way to *encode* binary files as *TEXT* file, so they
can be more easily and reliably transfered.
Then I try to use Binhex and
Unstuffit, neither of which even sees the internet-tour folder on my
desktop. What am I doing wrong? While I'm at it, I read a recent
note advising against using binhex. What should one use instead?
Use Unstuffit, or better yet, use Stuffit Expander. Just drop the
.hqx file on Stuffit Expander, and it will do the rest.
Actually, you can use anything that handles Binhex files, except
for Binhex itself!

Sometimes satire and sarcasm are wonderful tools for making a point,
and Dvorak is, afterall, the ANTI-editor.
I think his point was more towards saying that the people who
get upset when their games from 1985 no longer work on their Centris 040

What do these people expect?
Dvorak writes for many computer rags - in PC Week, or DEC Prof, or any others,
you will often catch the reverse of what you see in MacUser - he will be
griping about the PC realm and pointing out the success of the Mac. Or
the alpha.

I use a Duo 230 (a departmental purchase through MACC at Univ. of

about 1.5 months now and have had *NO* problems with key-bounce
producing two (or more) of the same character. I have been writing
documentation on the Mac, so I have used it quite a bit.
The only minor annoyances about the Duo keyboard (besides Apple's
funny location for the control key and bad layout for the arrow keys)
are: (1) the keyboard has a very noticeable sag in the lower left-hand
corner when a modifier key (CTRL, option, command, shift) is pressed;
(2) the keyboard is a bit small; (3) the space bar is harder to press
than one would expect. I have been able to easily get used to all of
these annoyances, so it is not a problem for me.
The real win in the keyboard design is actually having the trackball
right below. Being a devoted keyboard user (I do not like to mouse
around), it is really nice to be able to use the trackball with my
thumbs and never take my fingers off the home row.
All in all, the PowerBook series has a better keyboard (I have used a
PB170 quite a bit as well), but the Duo's keyboard works well enough.

Subject: Line in Apple Color Monitor (S)
Hello netters,
This is a summary of the replies that I received concerning the faint but
noticeable line on Trinitron color monitors.
The salient points of the replies are as follows:
1) The line is not a defect but is part of the construction of the Trinitron
color monitor.
2) The 16" monitor has two such lines (bottom and top).
3) The intensity of the line may vary from monitor to monitor but it is
usually faint. One can adjust the brightness and/or contrast of the monitor
to reduce the intensity of the line somewhat.
4) The line is the shadow of a thin wire inside the tube which holds the
mask in place or the anode or the vertical wires inside the tube. The
majority voted for holding the mask.
Most people agree (including me) that the line is a trade off for the
brightness and sharpness of this monitor.
Thanks to all who replied to my message.
Cheers.

In brief, what happened is this:
A public access BBS operated by Cincinnati Bell at cbos.uc.edu
started bouncing net mail last Saturday. Apparently, the mail
was returned in an incorrect manner causing Mac-L and numerous
other Listserv lists to see the returned mail as new messages.
These 'new messages', in turn, bounced and the process began
again. An enormous amount of duplicate mail was generated this
way.
The administration at cbos.uc.edu refuses to acknowledge the
problem but has, I've learned second hand, sent mail to list
owners telling them that the problem has been fixed.
The primary resource of a group like Mac-l (and Info-Mac, of
course) is the collective wisdom of its diverse membership. No
one knows it all, but between us, we know damn near everything.
When people are forced to quit the group, it's a loss to us all.
For the uninitiated, Mac-l is a Listserv discussion group
generating 30-50 notes a day on a wide variety of Mac related
subjects.
To subscribe, send a note to your favorite Listserv or use
listserv@yalevm.ycc.yale.edu. Anything in the subject line will
be ignored.

Apparently, Mac's that are AppleTalk networking over the ethernet

network storms (such as packet pings or whatever).
Now. My question is this: has anyone heard of this? I don't know any

CAP on my Sun workstation, will start generating a storm and I'll be
lynched.

This is an interesting problem, because I have a similar trouble with
my Plus (yeah, I need a new Mac) and haven't the foggiest idea what
started it. MacsBug fails to fully reboot the old dog, and I have to either
power down or hit the reset button to get the Mac past a black screen state.
I THINK the change came for me either with the upgrade to 4Mb RAM or the move
to 7.0. Both happened about the same time, and I haven't bothered to trace it,
given the fact that it's such a minor hassle (I do not routinely use MacsBug
to
reboot...)

Subject: Multimedia and full screen video applications
Multimedia applications involving full screen video. I'm interested
in finding out how the Macintosh can help us reduce costs
associated with making in house video production. Currently we out
source most of this at a cost of $7-8,000 per video and during a
year this adds up to quite a bit of money in the $40-80,000 range. We
would also like to be able to make our own multimedia type of
presentations as well as computer aided training systems. I'd also
like to make this as much as possible "plug'n play". I would like
to be able to support both platforms the IBM PC based machine and
the Macintosh.
Things I am interested in playing around with. Our Corporate
Medical Director has told me about a system that allows a user to
make his own CD-ROM disks at a cost of about $5,000 for the device.
Does anyone know what this product is or where I can get more
information about how it operates? AND, if I were to use this
product could I export the CD-ROM information to both a PC and a
Mac? Would it require additional software?
VideoVision. This looks like a product that might be of interest
to me for the types of applications I am interested in. Anyone
know exactly how this product works? Does it support full screen
video or just the little QuickTime boxes? What about the built in
video, will it replace the video that is built into the Quadra 700?
Or, will it allow two monitors to be hooked up at the same time?
Also, is 24bit color a lower or higher resolution than standard
NTSC broadcast video? What about with S-video connections. What
about audio? Stereo? What is the sampling rate?
VideoSpigot. This would appear on the surface to do much the same
thing as a VideoVision board though the price suggests otherwise.
Same questions as for the VideoVision. What is the difference
between a VideoSpigot Pro Nubus and the Spigot + Sound Pro? Does
this also digitize video?
NEC CD-Rom Drives. We just purchased a CDR-74 for the Mac and then
I hear the next day that there is a NEC MultiSpin 74-1 which
retails for $615. I was under the impression that the CDR-74
incorporated MultiSpin. Is this true? This new drive has SCSI-2 and
does Kodak Photo CDs and a 280ms access time. NEC CD-Rom Drives are
still the leader in the technology, right?
I'm sure I will have more questions about this as we start
experimenting with this new technology. Any advice that you can
offer will be greatly appreciated.

Subject: PowerBook 140 vs 145
Hi, all -- allow me to solicit some simple information. All
hardware snobs please turn a blind eye ;)
I am acting as an advisor (Being the most readily available Mac
person) to an individual looking to buy a low-end (read: cheap)
PowerBook. Their choice has been narrowed to a 140 or a 145. Our
dealer has some 140s left, but cannot offer an educational discount
on them, and of course the 145s are available with the discount. The
absence of the discount for the normally cheaper 140 puts both machines
within 150$ of each other, so price is not the problem in deciding.
Here are this person's criteria for the "ideal" PowerBook:
-- Speed is not that important. This person has been happily
using a Plus for several years now with no gripes, so both computers
are likely to please her.
-- The primary difference between the two models we're looking
at is the drive capacity: the 140 has an 80MB unit, and the 145 only
has a 40MB.
-- Here's the kicker: this computer will be used for field work
in foreign countries. Among other places, the unit will be used in
Indonesia, Borneo, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Japan. Electrical current
flexibility is a *MUST*. A spec sheet I have in front of me for the
140 pegs the line requirements at 110V-220V and 50-60Hz. This sounds
*great* to our prospective buyer, who assumes that this means that
the PB can be plugged directly into a wall (With an appropriate plug-
point converter) anywhere where the current falls within those limits
(Pretty much everywhere!). Any gotchas she should know about?
The other problem is, I haven't been able to find a complete spec
sheet for the 145. Is this "Universal" power supply still a feature in
the 145? If the 145 only accepts North American current, that would
be the deciding factor against it. Ideally, the PB should be able to
accept current from anywhere we could possibly take it, with no
further converter boxes. Is this realistic?
-- Question: How sturdy are the power conversion circuits in the
PBs? The current quality this unit is going to be used with is --
no exaggeration -- terrible. In some places, the current is literally
produced by a diesel generator sitting outside the hotel. Spikes,
sags, bad cycle frequency, etc. are all highly likely occurrences. How
well is the PB likely to stand up to this? From what I've heard, the
Macs with the universal power supplies are remarkably tolerant. How
far can we push this?
-- How noticeable is the speed difference between the 140/145? All
other things being equal, is it enough to give up 40MB of disk space
for? (If the difference isn't *that* noticeable, it becomes a question
of personal choice...)
-- Does anyone out there have any experience using PBs under bad
current conditions and are they willing to share any wisdom with us?
-- Can anyone recommend any extra batteries that have worked well
for them? It will probably be necessary to lug some extra battery
power along for long stints in the field.
Forgive the naive questions -- I've been using the Mac since 1984,
but this is my first real exposure to PB life. All the wisdom I've
accumulated about desktop machines seems to be useless in this domain...
Please respond to the E-Mail address below.
Thanks in advance for all replies.

I've been talking to several colleagues who have new 14" Apple

two 13" AppleColor monitors, and have no complaints about them.
The difficulty with my new 14" monitor is that the pixels are
not square. If I make a 500-pixel by 500-pixel square on my screen

Subject: Removing a ghost init
When my Mac starts up I get an icon of an init in shade form (mask?).
(I think it's the icon of "DeskTools" - but I'm not sure.)
It comes up even before the icon of Disinfectant whose name string
begins with that character usually diplayed as an empty square.
I have searched the hard disk for that init - but I cannot find
anything that is anywhere in the system extension folder (or control
devices folder for that matter).
What do I have to do to eradicate this stupid icon from the startup ?
Any ideas ?
Sven :) [If you followup - please send me a copy via email. Thanks!]

Subject: Reset DTDB (Q)
I have two questions re [./util/reset-dtdb-20.hqx]:
1. How reliable is it?
2. Presently, I use CommentKeeper 1.0 to save my Get Info comments
when I rebuild using Cmd-Opt at startup. Will Reset DTDB wipe out
all my Get Info comments permanently?
Thanks for your help.

Star Trek TNG fans - Next week's episode is "Handful of Datas" - a
classic-to-be
if you haven't already seen it.
Anyway, I have a huge request of the world: Could someone out there with the
ability to turn TV or VCR shots into color GIFs please make a nice big GIF of
the closing seen (just before credits) of this trek episode, with the
enterprise "riding off into the sunset"?
It's an awesome view of NCC-1701-D just above a full view of a planet who's
sun is about 1/2 covered during "sunset"

Subject: Sys 7.1 for Q700?
I know that there has been a lot of discussion about the merits of
patching System 7.1 to restore OmegaSANE, but this issue remains unclear
to me. I am considering upgrading from System 7.01 tuned-up to System 7.1
for the Q700. Does anyone know if I will benefit from such a patch. I
understand that Apple has a bunch of new enablers for System 7.1. Will I
need one of these? I would also like to hear your speculations about the
benefits of System 7.1. I know that there are some minor incompatibility
problems with certain software, but all-in-all do you think that it is
worth the trouble to upgrade now.

Given that VM needs contigious disk space, is it a good idea to reformat
the hard disk with a partition of the 10 Megs or so that I intend to
allocate to VM? <<
It's not really necessary. If you start with a clean disk, then install
the System and your applications, the remaining space on the disk will
be contiguous provided you don't delete anything in the meantime. Then
you can configure VM to grab part of that space. You don't have to
worry about losing it to fragmentation, because VM will always grab that
space first thing upon booting, and it will look like a single huge file
as far as the file system is concerned.
Nevertheless, I do think it's a nice idea to have a separate partition
for VM, if only so that you don't have to remember to figure in the
invisible VM file when adding up the space taken by your files. I
allocated a 13 Meg partition to accommodate the 12 Meg maximum VM space
I can have, and it works fine.

May be this is a FAQ and I don't read before. Sometimes when I install
software
with custom icons the icons get replaced by a regular ones. Is it because of
AutoDoupler? How I can get the custom icons back. Thanx

Subject: Writing an XCMD in Think C; Does an XCMD to send serially to printer
exist?
Hi. I'm looking for an XCMD that acts like "sendserial" that sends to
the printer port instead of the modem port. That is, it sends data to
the printer serial port directly, without going through a printer
driver. (I am seeking to control a printer manually.)
Secondly, I just got Think C 5.0.4 and would like to write XCMDs
myself to supplement my stacks. Think C comes with include files and
libraries for XCMDs but no information on how to use them. Is there
any docs online for this?
Email would be appreciated; I can summarize if desired.
Thanks,

Subject: XTND Translators not working w/ ClarisWorks 1.0.3
I have a MacII si running 7.0.1/Tuneup 1.1.1 and am using recent upgrade
of ClarisWorks 1.0.3. Prior to obtaining the upgrade, I noticed that
none of the XTND translators were showing under the import options for Word
Processing. To attempt to fix the problem, I have:
1. Reinstalled ClarisWorks (1.0.2)
2. Upgraded OS from 7.0 to 7.0.1
3. Deleted and recreated XTND Translators list (in Preferences Folder)
4. Upgraded ClarisWorks to 1.0.3.
After having done all of the above, ClarisWorks still doesn't recognize
any of the XTND Translators. I spoke with Claris and they suggested to
look for multiple system files(none), and to make sure everything in the
Claris folder in the system folder is in the proper place and is named
correctly (it is).
Other than this one problem, my system functions excellently. I feel the
problem is in the XTND Translators list, but I cannot figure out how to
rebuild it to the point that it works. On my system the translators list is
2k; on a system that works properly it is 9K. I also use the excellent
product from Teknosys, Help! 1.0.5 and it has not pointed out any conflicts
that might be causing this.
Has anyone experienced and/or corrected this? Please reply via E-mail.

Hi everyone,
does anyone have any experience (good or bad) with the Zoom VFX V.32bis
14,400 bps External Fax Modem? How does it compare to the Supra? The Zoom
is about $ 80 cheaper than the Supra, but I've heard a lot of good things

Okay, how come I can't use virtual memory on my new IIci with 7.1? Every
time I try to invoke it, my extensions load correctly, but just as they
finish I get a, "The System File is damaged in some way, you may fix this
using the Installer" or some-such message. Of course, when I restart using
the Installer, it wants to replace the whole system. I can get around this
by starting with no extensions loading, bring up the Memory control panel
and turn Virtual memory off, do a restart and everything is fine - I just
can't use Virtual memory.
Using 7.1, IIci, 8/80 configuration.
